Papuan Languages

This workshop will introduce attendees to the typology, diachrony, and prehistory of Papuan languages. There are over 800 Papuan languages, belonging to 80 unrelated families, so this workshop will need to be selective. Topics covered will include phonology; agreement; TAM marking; clause chaining and switch reference; grammaticalization and syntactic change; and prehistory.

University of Oregon
Don Daniels is an Associate Professor at the University of Oregon. He has been conducting fieldwork in Papua New Guinea since 2006, and has worked with speakers of a variety of Papuan languages, with a focus on languages of the Madang family. Since 2016, he has been engaged in a long-term documentation project on the Sgi Bara language.
