Call for Proposals
The 2027 Linguistic Institute in Eugene, OR, is looking for course proposals.
We are particularly interested in
- Courses related to the theme “Dynamics of Language”
- Courses introducing students who do not have linguistics at their home institution to core areas of linguistics (we currently need introductory courses in phonetics, phonology, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and neurolinguistic methods)
- “Adversarial collaboration” courses co-taught by a pair of instructors who approach the topic from different perspectives.
Courses can take place over 2 weeks (four 80-minute sessions), or 4 weeks (eight 80-minute sessions). The Institute will have two terms, June 28–July 9, and July 12–23. Introductory courses should ideally last the full 4 weeks.
Housing, Meals, & Honorarium
We will have dormitory housing on campus with single or double rooms with en-suite bathrooms (likely no air conditioning), or instructors can arrange their own accommodations, which will mean that the cost of the dorm room will be added to the honorarium below. Buffet lunch on teaching days will be provided.
Honoraria will include money for traveling to/from Eugene and will be ~$1800-2200 for instructors from North America, ~$2800-3200 for instructors from Europe and ~$3300-3700 for instructors from elsewhere. We cannot provide reimbursements for actual expenses, so the honorarium will represent the entirety of monetary compensation.
The amounts have been incremented relative to prior years to account for the fact that the honorarium is likely to be taxable for many. The range depends on the length of the course and whether it is cotaught.
A Unique & Collaborative Experience
We realize that teaching at the Institute is not financially lucrative in any way, but it is one of the best places to interact with colleagues and promising students from around the world, to find collaborators, and to spread your ideas to other linguists.
Eugene is also a wonderful place in the summer, with mountains, forests, deserts, wineries and a gorgeous coastline all within an easy drive. We hope to see you here!
How to Submit
Course Proposal
If you are interested in proposing a course, please fill out the following form by September 30th:
To fill out the form, you will need to have a proposed course title, description, schedule with possible readings, and a proposed way to assess students who need grades.
You will hear back by the end of October.
Wednesday Events
We are also looking for proposals for Wednesday events. These could take place on either June 30th, July 14th or July 21st 2027.
We are particularly interested in tutorials on (popular or promising) software and methodologies, and professional development events, whether geared towards academic jobs or jobs beyond academia.

Co-located Conferences & Workshops
Finally, we are looking for co-located conferences and workshops. These can take place on weekends or Wednesdays. We will provide a room and space for posters.
