X-min cities, perceived accessibility and urban simulation models

Ensuring and enhancing citizens' access to their fundamental needs has become a cornerstone in the strategies of contemporary urban planners. In the proposed workshop, attendees will be able to experiment with policy challenges using an interactive land use simulation model in three different settings: locate affordable housing in Rio de Janeiro including the creation of new infrastructure to improve active-mode accessibility, size incentives in Buenos Aires in order to convert an Olympic Villa into affordable housing in a way that attracts private investment and constrain urban heat islands in Switzerland by planting trees and creating green spaces.

Presenters

Federico Fernandez Federico Fernandez, URBANLY

Federico is the founder of URBANLY, a startup that creates land use simulation models to understand impact of policy changes. Before URBANLY, co-founded two startups: Synthicity which created novel technology to visualize huge amounts of urban data with procedural technology, acquired in 2015 by Autodesk Inc, and UrbanSim, a startup that grew to 4M annual revenue in a few years, putting together a team of 25 talented professionals. Federico holds a MSc. CS, and a comprehensive experience in academic research in theoretical CS (formal software verification with Joseph Sifakis, 2007 Turing Award) and its intersection with Planning.
