Car-lite? Car-free? Car-gone? Applied research on reducing car-dependece in Europe
As sharing, micromobility, e-bikes and e-cargo bikes continue to gain traction as key features of the urban mobility future, research is ongoing on how best to apply these mobility tools to achieve truly sustainable, healthy, and just cities. This session presents applied research, supported by the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership, addressing the many facets of reducing car-dependence and reaching 15-minute cities. The work engages residents in seven cities and four countries in participatory design of shared mobility through gamification, pilot projects, and living labs, focusing on using shared cargo bikes to reduce auto-dependence.

Raphaela Mak, Metvibee
Raphaela Mak (she/they) is a trans-disciplinary artist and entrepreneur based in Stockholm, Sweden. She works across urbanism, music and arts, sports, and tourism. She has particular interests in placemaking and participatory processes.
In 2023 she co-founded Metvibee with Stefany Cevallos and Shek Lun Leung, creating an AR platform for participatory urban design. |

Devon McAslan, Chalmers University of Technology
Devon McAslan is a researcher in sustainable transport and mobility at Chalmers University of Technology. His work explores urban planning, policy and governance issues related to sustainable transportation transitions. His research topics include the impacts of reduced parking requirements, urban accessibility via shared mobility, shared mobility, especially cargo bikes. He also researches topics related to walkability, public transport, and emerging technologies. Devon often collaborates with municipalities, housing companies, transit agencies, and others on applied research projects that answer socially relevant questions related to mobility transitions. |

Daniel Piatkowski, Oslo Metropolitan University
Dan Piatkowski is associate professor of Integrated Land Use and Transportation Planning at OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University. Originally from the United States, before moving to Norway, Dan taught urban planning at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln and at Savannah State University. He also worked in bicycle research and advocacy across the US. He is the author of many articles, the book Bicycling for Transportation: An Evidence-Base for Communities, and Bicycle City: Riding the Bike Boom to a Brighter Future. |
