One Less Car: The Keys to a Car-Light Future

Congestion. Sprawl. Emissions. Many challenges plaguing today’s cities stem from an overreliance on private cars. To explore the changes needed to shift away from car dependency, Uber challenged 58 Australians to give up one car for a month in exchange for public transport, carshare, e-bike, and rideshare credits. We found that access to four transport alternatives can not only substitute the car, but also positively impact health, wellbeing, and sense of community. This session outlines the experiment’s findings and embeds the results in state-of-art research. Panelists will debate system changes required to transition towards car-light futures.

She is also appointed Professor of Cycling at Ghent University and serves on numerous boards, including the Cycling Research Board. |

Lidia Signor, Head of Multimodal Mobility Unit, UITP Lidia Signor is the Head of Multimodal Mobility Unit at UITP, the international association of public transport. She works on combined mobility (focusing on the integration of mass transit with active and shared mobility for a car-light future) as well as shared mobility. Italian national, she got her main degree from Ecole des Ponts, France, in Urban Mobility Planning and Design, before specialising in International Cooperation. After her professional experience in France, Peru and Morocco and before joining UITP 4 years ago, she gained valuable expertise at the MaaS Alliance. She speaks Italian, French, Spanish, English and basic Portuguese. |

Karen Vancluysen, Secretary General, POLIS network Karen Vancluysen was appointed as Secretary General of POLIS in 2014, after having been the network's Research Director for 10 years.
