Mobility Hub Experiences and Lessons Learnt – Planning, Design, Community, Mobility, and Digitization

This workshop will explore different experiences relating to the designing, planning, implementing, operating, and managing of Mobility Hubs. It will consist of panel discussions moderated by Sandra Phillips and a fun interactive activity in break-out groups. The speakers will share lessons learnt from different perspectives including: shared-mobility deployment and mobility operators, retrofitting public space into community-oriented neighborhood hubs with mobility activities, conceptualizing an urban mobility hub network and the digital twin, intelligent curb management and data standards, intermodal passenger facilities, and the consideration of mobility hubs in master-planed developments early on in the planning phase.
CE Credits for APA, AIA, and ASLA, should be available for many sessions and workshops. More information on this will be available shortly.
Presenters
Nick Falbo, Portland Bureau of Transportation Nick Falbo is a Senior Transportation Planner in the Portland Bureau of Transportation’s Public Realm and Street Activation group, specializing in the design of spaces for people, and multimodal complete streets. Nick contributed to and illustrated the NACTO Urban Bikeway Design guide, and helped popularize the Protected Intersection for Bicyclists design concept in the US. Nick leads the development of the bureaus Street Seats and Street Plaza programs. Putting the City of Portland’s strong policies into action on the ground, Nick helps lead Portland to a future as a prosperous, healthy and equitable city. |
Yuval Fogelson, Arcadis IBI Group / CurbIQ Yuval has a background in urban designer with specialization in public space transformations, digitization strategies, and new mobility. He is a Curbside Mobility Specialist working with CurbIQ (Arcadis IBI Group’s curbside solutions software), advancing efforts to digitize curbside inventories of cities. His research work on transitioning into new mobility and future curb space design was conducted at the University of British Columbia’s Transport Infrastructure and Public Space Lab under TransLink’s New Mobility Research Grant. Yuval has theoretical and practical experience in tactical urbanism methodologies and phasing strategies for street-redesign projects and re-allocation of curb space. |
Oliver Hartleben, Arcadis IBI Group Oliver Hartleben is an architect and city planner focused on evolving policy, urban design, built form, mobility, outreach, and innovation topics. Oliver has worked over 20 years in the planning, architecture and transportation sectors, is currently working on several interdisciplinary projects in the United States and Canada, and has a long-standing track record of urban master planning, strategic planning, TOD and in-person and virtual stakeholder outreach processes. Oliver has conducted research on urban design, mobility, and housing topics, has taught at different public and private universities, and currently leads IBI's West Coast Urban Planning and Urban Design Practice. |
Duncan Hwang, APANO and Jade District Duncan is the Community Development Director at APANO, a community based organization that serves primarily Oregon's fast growing AANHPI community. He oversees the organization's transportation planning, economic development, and affordable housing programs. He also guide's APANO's Jade District work, a place based initiative that is creating Portland's most transit rich and affordable neighborhood. In 2022, Duncan was also elected to Metro representing District 6, which includes SE and SW Portland. Duncan received his BA from the University of Michigan and a JD from Lewis and Clark Law School. |
Sandra Phillips, movmi - Shared Mobility Consultants Sandra Phillips is a Shared Mobility Architect and Principal with movmi, an award-winning women-owned agency focused on Shared Mobility. movmi builds healthier communities co-creating innovative mobility solutions that increase transportation options for everyone while reducing dependency on private car ownership.Through movmi Sandra has been involved in close to 80 on-demand shared mobility projects worldwide. Previously Sandra held Senior Management and Executive roles with Fortune 500 companies, innovating their transportation services. Her work in shared mobility has garnered her a TED talk, a Clean50 award and the 2021 Change Maker Award by BCBusiness. |
Bill Schwartz, Nelson\Nygaard Bill Schwartz, AICP is a Principal in Nelson\Nygaard’s Boston office. Bill has 40 years of transportation consulting experience and focuses his current practice on helping older adults and people with disabilities travel. He is an expert in ADA compliance and helps transit agencies improve service delivery and plan for new mobility services, including microtransit. Bill chairs ITE’s MaaS/MOD Standing Committee and is also Principal Investigator on TCRP D-21, Planning the Future of Intermodal Passenger Facilities, which will include guidance on planning larger mobility hubs. |
