Supporting Productive Struggle through manipulatives

Supporting productive struggle involves utilizing rich mathematical tasks that engage students in solving and discussing. Manipulatives can be utilized as a representation to help each and every student with such tasks by providing an entry point. Additional strategies to support productive struggle will be shared.

Kevin Dykema is the current Past President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). After 30 years in his district in southwest Michigan, 26 of them as a middle school teacher, he recently retired and is now consulting with school districts. Kevin is a frequent speaker before mathematics education audiences and has co-authored Productive Math Struggle, published by Corwin. Dykema loves working with others to help improve mathematics education for each and every student
