Mathematician Biography Project

Where does Math come from? Give your students the opportunity to teach one another about real mathematicians from all around the globe and from throughout history.
Over the course of six block periods, interwoven with their regular math unit work, students research a mathematician and share their learning with the class through a creative product. They choose from a list of 50+ mathematicians including current and ancient, and from throughout the world.
Students research their mathematician, answer specific factual questions, and then work on a creative piece to share with the class: a graphic novel, video, picture book, fictionalized autobiography, etc.
In this presentation, you will get to see the student materials, teacher slideshow, project timeline, and rubric. Various example schedules will be presented, including block and 5-day, interwoven or intensive.

Sweet Math
Lurline Sweet holds a BA from Reed College and an MAT from Marylhurst University. She also learned the craft of teaching as an apprentice teacher at Arbor School of Arts and Sciences’ Center for Teaching. Lurline initially began teaching math to 2nd and 3rd graders, but soon found herself teaching 4th through 8th grade math as well. She had the opportunity to work with both elementary and middle school math resources. This helped her identify the need for a more robust curriculum and activities to supplement secondary mathematical teaching and learning, leading to the foundation of Sweet Math.
