Building an Elementary Thinking Classroom: Neither a Band-Aid Nor a Bandwagon T2
,
Holiday Inn Portland, Glisan Room, Lower level
Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics by Peter Liljedahl is taking the math world by storm, and teachers from all over the world are embracing it. It’s transformative. It’s a game changer. It’s the real deal, and it works with our youngest learners. This pre-conference workshop will invite participants to dive into the why and the how of building their own elementary thinking classroom. They will experience a thinking task. They will see examples of it in action in a first-grade classroom. They will receive helpful resources and the time to digest them. They will discover that a thinking classroom is neither a Band-Aid nor a bandwagon, and it’s worth building.

Tammy McMorrow has been teaching first grade for 29 years in Kuna, Idaho. She started incorporating BTC into her classroom in January of 2022 and quickly became won over by its magic and messiness. Watching her young students think, really think, lit a fire in her. She became determined to start a movement — to spread the news of BTC to whomever would listen. She started a Facebook page for K-2 teachers. She led a book study at her school. She welcomed teachers from both inside and outside her district to observe BTC in her space. She’s forever grateful for the power of Peter Liljedahl’s research and how it has transformed learning for her mathematicians.
