You, Too, Can Build an Elementary Thinking Classroom

,
Holiday Inn Portland, Timberline (formerly Weyerhaeuser), Lower level

Are young students really capable of doing the work of Building Thinking Classrooms? What does an elementary thinking classroom even look like? Thinking tasks? Where am I supposed to find them? I have no idea where to start. This session is perfect for you if you are familiar with Building Thinking Classrooms, but these aforementioned questions have crossed your mind. Participants will experience a thinking task, as well as see and hear examples of an elementary thinking classroom in action. They will be offered a roadmap for how to implement the first three practices from Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics by Peter Liljedahl and be given helpful resources to get them started. They will leave this session with hope that they, too, can build an elementary thinking classroom.

Public School Teacher

Tammy McMorrow has been teaching first grade for 29 years in Kuna, Idaho. She started incorporating BTC into her classroom in January of 2022 and quickly became won over by its magic and messiness. Watching her young students think, really think, lit a fire in her. She became determined to start a movement — to spread the news of BTC to whomever would listen. She started a Facebook page for K-2 teachers. She led a book study at her school. She welcomed teachers from both inside and outside her district to observe BTC in her space. She’s forever grateful for the power of Peter Liljedahl’s research and how it has transformed learning for her mathematicians.
