Community Health Worker
Sel Mpang serves as a Community Health Worker for Collaborative Cottage Grove and is a long standing resident of the Cottage Grove community. She was chosen by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of NC to participate in their internship program, standing out among hundreds of applicants because she exemplifies the essence of her community: strong, resilient and working to create change. She is Bunong-American, born in a small village in Vietnam within one of five Montagnard indigenous groups. Sel’s ability to relate to the challenges of her community are due to her personal experiences as a refugee and living in the neighborhood she is working hard to improve, and causes her to pour her life experience into her role as a Community Health Worker while applying her education from Guilford College as a Community and Justice Studies major. Due to her relational skills and her ability to build relationships, she is able to usher in organizational leaders to the community that can aid in support and community change. Her vision is to see her community’s health improved and the entire area revitalized so that she, her family and her neighbors have a better quality of life.
