James Longhurst is a historian of urban and environmental policy, and the author of Bike Battles: A History of Sharing the American Road (2015). He is an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, with a Ph.D. in history and policy from Carnegie Mellon University. Longhurst is a bike advocate involved in local transportation politics on numerous committees, and a volunteer at Bicycle La Crosse; the Wisconsin Bike Fed named him “Advocate of the Year” in 2016, and the La Crosse Convention and Visitor’s Bureau named him “Volunteer of the Year” in 2017. He is also a slow roadie, regular bike commuter, amateur mechanic, everyday cyclist, shop intern, and lapsed recreational triathlete.
