The Applied Learning Requirement

Purpose

The Applied Learning requirement is designed to provide experiential learning opportunities that are student-initiated and related to the student's learning interests. This requirement is for participants seeking the Certificate of Completion.

Designing Your Experience

The first step is to talk with our Academic Advisor, Dr. Gaylene Carpenter, about defining learning objectives and activities that are appropriate for you. Gaylene can be reached at (541) 346-5600 or gcarpent@uoregon.edu.

Activities

Students must complete both of the following courses:

  • 4 credits of AAD 409/609 Practicum
This involves 120 clock hours at an approved site, with progress statements and a summary report. Activities are logged by the student and supervised jointly by a local site supervisor and the UO Academic Advisor.
  • 2 credits of AAD 406/606 Project (Special Problem)
This component is commonly referred to as "the project." This is an opportunity to examine a subject area of particular interest to you. The result of this inquiry is usually in the form of a written product. The focus can be a hypothetical or real event. For example, you may outline marketing strategies, prepare documents related to sponsorship benefit packages, devise tools for tracking and evaluating organizational procedures, etc.

Detailed guidelines and approval forms are available through one-on-one advising at a workshop session or by special arrangement.

The Practicum and Project activities may be directly related, or may be designed as distinct experiences, depending on your learning objectives and opportunities. Completed projects created by participants who have earned the Certificate of Completion are available for review.

Registration Procedures

The Applied Learning requirement is administered as credit-bearing registration, consisting of 4 credits in practicum and 2 credits in special problems. A total of 6 credit hours is required to satisfy the applied portion of the certificate.

Please note that the registration process and fees for the "Applied" portion are separate from the workshop registration process.

  • If you are not currently a student or employee at UO, your registration can be processed with manual paperwork. You will be a Community Education Program (CEP) student during the term for which you are actively registered.*
  • If you are currently a UO student, either matriculating or as a CEP student, you should register through DuckWeb as you usually do. Pre-authorization is required.*
  • If you are an OUS employee (staff or faculty at .50 FTE or greater), you can register under staff rates.* See staff rates details at http://hr.uoregon.edu/benefits/staffrates.html.

*For assistance with these special registration processes, please contact Heather Fisher or Sandra Gladney at (541) 346-4231 or ctrinfo@uoregon.edu.

Questions regarding the Professional Development Workshops should be directed to Pat Phillips or Sandra Gladney at (541) 346-4231 or ctrinfo@uoregon.edu.
