Specific Course Requirements

Astronomy and Physics courses require JAVA The online astronomy and physics courses rely heavily on the use of JAVA applets. Students taking these courses must have access to one of the following sets:

Set One (for PC users):

  • Microsoft Windows 98
  • Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher, Netscape 6 or higher, or Firefox 2 or higher
  • The most recent JAVA plug-in from Sun Microsystems.

Set Two (for Macintosh users):

  • Macintosh OS X (Mac OS 10.1 or higher have JAVA support built into the operating system)
  • Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher, Netscape 6 or higher, or Firefox 2 or higher. Note: OSX is available to UO students at an educational price from the UO Bookstore.

* NOTE: Macintosh OS 8 or 9 cannot be used for these classes on their own! Emulator programs such as Virtual PC from Microsoft will need to be installed. Virtual PC is a commercial program and can be purchased online or at the UO Duck Store for around $250. The only other option available for Classic Mac users is to upgrade to Mac OS X. However, not all older Mac systems will be able to use it so check the system requirements before proceeding with installation.
