Administration

Distance Education courses are part of the larger UO curriculum. Academic oversight of course content and grading comes from the academic units and the Office of the Registrar.

Administrative and technical support comes from a variety of units across the university. Although these support units are de-centralized at UO, specific functions are housed in particular areas.

  • Distance Education Program (within the Office of Continuing Education)
This office serves as the "front line" resource for a variety of needs including marketing efforts, fielding student inquiries, routing enrolled students to course materials and ancillary resources, as well as providing general information about DE activities at UO in response to OUS system initiatives and outside agency requests for information. Additionally, this office provides direct support for courses that are administered in partnership with an academic unit and Continuing Ed under the self-supporting budget structure. In particular, additional technical support for the Blackboard course management system is provided for both students and faculty.
  • Social Science Instructional Labs (within the College of Arts & Sciences)
This facility houses PC-based computer labs designed to assist faculty, staff and students with innovative instructional technology applications in the social sciences. This unit is the primary support for undergraduate courses administered under the regular tuition model with SSIL providing web site development and computer-based testing services.

Delivery Mechanisms

For support in selecting, developing, and enhancing the delivery mechanisms, there are now many resources at the university for both the professor and the student. In addition to the Distance Education Program and SSIL, the following units are essential for understanding and utilizing many of the existing and emerging technologies.

  • Faculty Instructional Technology Training (FITT) Center
Housed in the UO Knight Library, this unit supports and encourages faculty to understand, explore, and design ways of integrating effective technology into teaching. Individual consulting and training for any faculty or GTF (graduate teaching fellow) is also provided free of charge.
  • The Teaching Effectiveness Program (TEP)
As part of Academic Learning Services, TEP offers a variety of activities and services to engage the academic community in viewing, assessing, and improving undergraduate instruction. TEP services are free to faculty members, GTFs, and university departments.
  • Media Services
Located in UO Knight Library, the Media Services group provides a suite of services, including the Interactive Media Group, Television Production, and Technology in the Classrooms.
