Frequently Asked Questions

Tech Requirements

Are there any special technical requirements/skills I need in order to take an online course?

Students most successful in Distance Education courses are highly motivated and accustomed to independent learning. They are also comfortable accessing and using the Internet and e-mail. At the minimum, students should have access to the following:

Basic System Requirements:

  • An active UO e-mail address (e.g. disted@uoregon.edu).
  • Apple or PC based system from within the last three years.
  • Internet connection: Cable or DSL is strongly recommended.
  • Web browsers (Firefox, Internet Explorer), which are as current as possible.
  • PHYSICS and ASTRONOMY courses also require that a student's web browser be able to run Java applets.

Many courses require more software programs, such as media players or Acrobat Reader, as well as other hardware, such as a scanner, digital camera, or microphone. Check Technical Resources and Services for more specific technical requirements and helpful links.
