Greening The ConferenceWe're managing the following efforts to keep our environmental footprint as small as possible. Transportation: C02 emissions resulting from travel by speakers and registrants attending the conference will produce the largest environmental impact. To reduce this we're working with three out-of-state speakers will demonstrate the viability of video-conferencing technology. By staying home speakers from Vermont, Colorado, and California are preventing an estimated 2 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. Students who carpool to the conference in groups of three or more will have their fuel costs reimbursed and can fill their tanks at the SeQuential Biofuels filling station. A point person from each OUS institution will be coordinating carpools and/or van rides for staff planning to attend the conference. Food: UO Catering and Holy Cow have developed special menus for this conference. All food served will be locally grown and/or produced, in season, and organic. Fair Trade coffee will be served as well. Pre-consumer veggie scraps will be composted and used as soil amendments at the UO's Urban Farm. Prepared but un-served food will be donated to FOOD for Lane County. Meals will be served on reusable china and snacks will be served on compostable plates that will be captured by the UO Recycling Program's new composting program. Paper: We are making every effort to reduce and eliminate wasteful printing. Programs and other materials are printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper. |
