Located in the Hult Center in downtown Eugene.

Gallery Management and Organization

This course is designed to offer instruction in the management and operations related to the presentation of art media in a variety of venues, including public and private galleries, public spaces, and alternative sites. Participants will:

  • explore and practice a range of activities necessary to plan for, install, and document artwork
  • explore and develop aesthetic values and critical vocabulary to guide in art selection and review
  • develop a presentation which will demonstrate specific aspects of the exhibition experience
  • expand their understanding of the work of the professional artist and the vital role of exhibitions
  • explore a variety of gallery business models, including contracting artists, insurance, budget creation and management, and marketing strategies
  • participate in a field work experience in a local gallery under the direction of the Gallery Director or other personnel
  • document their experience in a journal
  • develop organizational skills appropriate to presenting works of art in a gallery.

Gallery Management and Organizations, offered Spring term, will meet Mondays in the Jacobs Gallery at the Hult Center.

Who Can Take These Classes?

  • UO students may choose to take this course to enhance their primary studies or expand their knowledge.
  • Community members will have an opportunity to get to know the excellent faculty and facilities of the UO Arts and Administration Program.
  • Museum curators and exhibitors who are already interested and knowledgeable can further expand their experience and goals through this course.
  • Artists wishing to understand how galleries operate will be able to explore business models, marketing and other aspects of gallery management.
