Fall 2009 Books Arts Course InformationThese courses are offered under the subject and number, ART 408, unless otherwise noted. Mapping the PersonalThis course is about our individual journeys and personal travels from birth to the present. Students will present their story in the form of "personal mapping" by creating works that look at physical places, memories, and feelings of the routes they've taken. These works of art will be in any of the following techniques: monotype printmaking, watercolor painting, collage, or drawing. Students will bind their works together into a Japanese style book, creating an atlas of their personal world, a continuing unfolding of a particular life.
Fundamentals of ColorUsing a series of specific projects, students will learn how to mix, dull, brighten, and match colors. This course will also explore the interaction of color, an essential part of the visual arts.
Children’s Books: StoryStudents will write or choose a story and create thumbnail sketches for the design of a book. This course will also examine the contribution of rhythm and color to book design.
Pop-upsStudents will study the basics of paper engineering, as well as eight simple techniques. Students will use paper engineering in combination with paint and other media to make cards, posters, and illustrations.
Creating and Using a Visual JournalThe visual journal offers a place for merging visual observations and ideas with writing from experience, reflection, or emotional response. Students will make a soft-cover journal and practice quick-sketch techniques in various media. Writing will complement and enrich visual images; together, this gives an integrated visual presence to the page.
Illustration: Transparent and Opaque WatercolorTransparent water and opaque watercolor (gouache) have both similar and different properties. They can be used individually or in combination. Students will create several small pieces to explore the properties and suitability of various kinds of illustration.
Contemporary Calligraphy: The Pointed BrushContemporary pointed brush writing is lively and expressive, offering many creative possibilities for original art, for graphic work for reproduction, and for development as a computer font. This versatile tool will be used to write a basic script and an array of variations.
