Purpose & Objectives

The purpose of this presentation is to inform participants of the engagement level of media (digital video), its relevance and important to classroom instruction, and its ease of use. Participants will gain from example of media's potential for extended educational applications in teacher training, school-to-home communication, evaluation (including self-evaluation), and assessment. A variety of websites, including social sites like TeacherTube, content creation sites like VoiceThread, creation tools like Jing, and hardware including flipcams and cellphones, will be demonstrated with connection to curriculum, training, and school outreach.

Outline

Content will include digital video created during the session with a variety of hardware and software, and curriculum-based videos and original student projects. To demonstate ease of use, video clips will be moved to the web, transformed on Web 2.0 sites,integrated into assignments, and published online. Integration will include blogs, social networking sites, and content libraries. Video's use in teacher training will be demonstrated with media from schools of education. Examples of "video blasts" to homes and faculty will be briefly shown.

Supporting Research

Research on importance of engagement from the Gates Foundation, Davidson Institute (no relation)for the Highly Gifted and Talented, and drop-out prevention unit at the nation's second largest district (Los Angeles Unified). Data on improved student achievement with media will be sited from several independent studies (2005, 2003).

Presenter Background

Presenter has done teacher training in video content creation for K-12 teachers and schools of education for more than twenty years, beginning in the Los Angeles Unified School District (1984) through Discovery Communications (2008). Presenter founded video curriculum content and implementation awards in LAUSD, now in their 22nd year. Present coordinated the nations oldest media festival for students, the California Student Media Festival, for more than a dozen years. It is now in its 43rd year. During two decades in education at PBS stations, presenter produced programs in content, technology integration, copyright, parent education, and the arts, and served on-camera on Emmy-winning educational program. Presentar has served as college faculty in technology for teacher candidates and done professinal development in media for educators K-16.
