Purpose & Objectives

Special Note: if this session is accepted, panelists for this session will be chosen from the over-12,000 member Classroom 2.0 social network, and forwarded to NECC for approval.

The purpose of this session will be to give a report on the state of Web 2.0 in education. Both pedagogical and practical concerns will be discussed, looking at where Web 2.0 is being used successfully and the legal and organizational barriers that implementation is facing.

Categories of questions for the panel:

Where are you seeing success in the use of Web 2.0 in education?
Is Web 2.0 living up to its promise as an educational/pedagogical technology, and why or why not?
What legal and administrative barriers does Web 2.0 face, and how have you solved those (if you have)?

Presenter Background

I have presented at NECC, CUE, IL-TCE, FETC, and a number of other ed tech conferences over the last four years. I am the director of the K12 Open Technologies Initiative at the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), and am the founder of the Classroom 2.0 social network (www.classroom20.com). I blog, speak, and consult on educational technology, and am particularly passionate about Free and Open Source Software, Web 2.0, computer reuse, and computing for low-income populations. I run the Open Source Pavilion and speaker series for the NECC and CUE shows, am the organizer of EduBloggerCon, and hold a series of free workshops around the country (Classroom 2.0 LIVE) to help educators learn about the educational uses of the participative aspect of the Web. I consult for Ning, running their http://education.ning.com site as well as many others. I am also the Emerging Technologies Chair for NECC, a regular columnist at School Library Journal, and a blogger at www.SteveHargadon.com, the Infinite Thinking Machine and TechLearning.
