Purpose & Objectives

The digital age has created new concerns regarding the use of non-traditional electronic and Internet resources in the educational setting. The speed with which students acquire information technology skills may be chronically outpacing educators' abilities to ensure that positive habits of on-line behavior are being formed. Therefore, Cyberethics, Cybersafety, and Cybersecurity in a Web-2.0 World are issues that need to be integrated in the educational process beginning at an early age Unfortunately, while the teaching of technology processes and skills has been handed to the classroom teacher, most educators lack the knowledge and up-to date information related to Cyberawareness issues. Teacher technology training has been geared toward skills development and integration techniques. Teachers, in many instances, model incorrect protocols and behaviors to their students. Not only does this increase the chance of improper use it also increases the risks to the security of the teacher's own classroom and local school system's information systems. Additionally, new concerns such as cyberbullying and sexting and other youth high-risk online behavior have entered the playing environment.

The core mission of this session is to inform the educational community about the ethical, legal, safety, and security implications of technology use in a Web-2.0 world.


Through the presentation of content and exploration through case studies and group work, participants will give consideration to responses that can be applied in their own settings. Participants will also learn recent findings from the National C3 Baseline Study and can learn how to get more actively involved in National Cyber Security Awareness Month Initiative.

Materials including proceedings from the University of Maryland's 7th annual C3 conference and the National Cyber Security Alliance Awareness Toolkit will be provided

Presenter Background

Davina Pruitt-Mentle is Director of Education Technology Policy, Research and Outreach, and a faculty lecturer within the College of Education at the University of Maryland. Her research and development interests have focused on the role of distance learning in education, particularly cultivating the Internet as an environment in which to conduct professional development (PD) opportunities, and cultural differences towards technology use. A main initiative within this PD portfolio involves educators and students knowledge of Cybersecurity, Cybersafety and Cyberawareness (C3). In partnership with the National Cyber Security Alliance several initiatives have been put in place to include an annual C3 conference http://www.edtechpolicy.org/C32009/ C3 workshops and graduate level courses, on-line tutorials and the National Cyber awareness month interactive calendars (April and October) and Founder of the C3Institute.
