Purpose & ObjectivesThis workshop will provide an extremely hands-on tour through a variety of the newest Web 2.0 applications for wikis, blogs, document sharing, social networks, video sharing, social bookmarking, and more. Some background will be shared about the professional development benefits of these tools for administrators and teachers, as well as the learning benefits of these tools for students. However, the focus of the workshop will hands-on exploration of using the tools. The primary objective of this workshop is to give participant hands-on experience with a wide range of tools that they may be hearing a lot about, but may not have actually used. The workshop will be guided by a wiki with links, descriptions, applications, and instructions for a variety of tools. This wiki will serve as a useful tool for participants to access after the workshop and will also help model the use of Web 2.0 tools for professional development. Participants are required to have an email address that they can access during this workshop. It is recommended that all participants sign up for a gmail account prior to the workshop. After attending this workshop, participants will: - Have an understanding of Web 2.0 and its appeal - Understand the educational benefits and have hands-on experience using: + wikis + blogs + social networks + document creation and sharing tools + online video sharing + online podcasting - Think about a plan for using these tools in their professional and personal lives OutlineBelow is an outline of this workshop with approximate times for each portion. The format of this workshop will be extremely hands on with minimal presentation. For each topic, participants will be given several sites to explore and very short "quick start" instructions via a wiki. (A primary site will be suggested with others being listed if the participant already has used the first.) They will then sign on to the site if necessary and explore creating and using content from the site. An online wiki and other tools will be used for the participants to record their impressions and ideas for how they would use each tool in their professional and personal lives.Participants are required to have an email address that they can access during this workshop. She has been a classroom teacher, a network system administrator, and is currently the Director of Instructional Technology for the Hot Springs School District. Having a passion for technology and the aspiration to make it ‘easy’ for teachers, she is focused on connecting technology to the curriculum. Throughout her career, she has provided professional development at numerous school districts, regional educational cooperatives, and state conferences. Her recent workshops and presentations have emphasized the importance of multimedia and visual literacy for classroom instruction as well as for student projects. Sharing the Web 2.0 applications with teachers and administrators is her latest initiative. Becky has served on the board of a task force for educational technology legislation and is currently serving as secretary of ARKSTE. She is also a coordinator of the well-regarded Hot Springs Technology Institute conference, held each year. ---------------------- Karen Fasimpaur An enthusiastic user of a variety of technologies, Karen Fasimpaur has over fifteen years experience in education and educational technology, working with schools and educational organizations to integrate technology. She is a nationally-known consultant, providing professional development and technology planning assistance to districts and schools across the country. Karen is currently President of K12 Handhelds, which focuses on mobile technology in education. A noted speaker on the use of handheld computers in education, Karen has presented workshops on this topic at the NECC, FETC, TCEA, and CUE. She has written extensively on the use of handhelds in education and is the author of the award-winning book 101 Great Educational Uses for Your Handheld Computer. She produces the podcast "Karen's Educational Mashups." Previously, she served as President of Futurekids, a K-12 educational technology integration company with operations in 75 countries worldwide. Before that, Karen was an executive at Davidson & Associates, where she held positions as Executive Producer in charge of school software development and Director of Online Business Development. At Davidson, she oversaw a joint venture with Addison Wesley to produce an innovative multimedia history curriculum in collaboration with the California, Florida, and Texas state departments of education.
