Opening Reception
Sunday, June 24, 7–9 pm
An opening night splash! The NECC 2007 Opening Reception is sure to please everyone! Join your fellow conference participants and their families at the brand new Georgia Aquarium — the largest aquarium in the world (by both square footage and tank size)!
All attendees receive complimentary admission to the aquarium to explore to their heart's content, as do registered guests, exhibitor personnel, and non-registered family members who accompany registrants. Light food and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided, courtesy of NECC's Tier One sponsors.
The reception follows NECC's Opening Keynote at the Georgia World Congress Center. Shuttle transportation will be provided between the GWCC, the Aquarium, and most conference hotels.
The Georgia Aquarium features eight million gallons of fresh and marine water, with more than 120,000 animals representing 500 species from around the globe! Current exhibits include:
- Cold Water Quest features Beluga whales, California sea lions, sea otters, African black-footed penguins, Australian leafy sea dragons, giant Pacific octopus, garibaldi damselfish, and Japanese spider crabs. These animals, and more, give you a glimpse of the rich variety of life found in cold ocean waters. These are the same regions that support the world's major fisheries, many of which are in peril.
- Georgia Explorer features a highly interactive gallery with touch tanks full of horseshoe crabs, sea stars, stingrays and shrimp; and Georgia sea turtles and the fishes of Gray's Reef, an underwater area off the Georgia coast designated a National Marine Sanctuary. Right Whales, one of the most endangered mammals on the planet, are also included. They spend the winter and give birth to their calves in Georgia waters.
 - River Scout features a themed environment of waterfalls, logjams, and a simulated meandering North American river. Electric fishes of Africa and South America are presented in aquariums and highlighted in video programs. A "walk-in" piranha tank and the highly sociable Asian small-clawed otter are included.
- Tropical Diver features one of the largest living reef exhibits of any aquarium in the world. Living corals and thousands of colorful reef fishes are presented in a faithful recreation of a tropical Pacific coral reef. Animals include: sand-dwelling garden eels and tiny glassy sweepers, colorful reef squid and clown fish, seahorses, fairy basslets, yellow-head jawfish, and jellies ("jellyfish").
