| NETS Summary: |
This workshop encompasses all aspect of integrating technology into the classroom. It is not just about how the SMART Board works, but how it works for better student achievement. This achievement is brought about by interacting with one's content and students on levels never attempted before. A key component to the SMART Technologies is interacting with students of different interests and abilities. Through the combination of the SMART Board and the SMART wireless Slate, a teacher can be working with multiple students at once. This combination as well as other teaching strategies of technology integration will be discussed to show that differentiated instruction is possible. This session is a perfect introduction to the emergent technology of SMART Board Interactive Whiteboards. Throughout the entire session content specific examples will be shown. Ideas, concepts, and teaching strategies will be shared in how to integrate technology seamlessly into the classroom. More than just interactive whiteboard technology will be discussed. How an interactive whiteboard interacts with others technologies such as pc cams, cameras, microphones, scanners, and printers will be demonstrated. Also ideas such as websites, pod casting, movies will also be demonstrated. Every aspect of this integration will be shown from student interaction, teacher use, and administrator support. All three components are needed for the best results of the students. The entire goal is to show how one technology can bridge between all others and bridge students to learning and teachers. |

Purpose & ObjectivesAs part of my Doctorate program, I am studying technology integration as a whole in the what and the how do you place technology into the classroom for the best student achievement possible. Interactive whiteboards are still a fairly new concept and are changing our current curriculum techniques. It are these new techniques and more that will be demonstrated, by comparing the old ideas to new ideas. Normal classroom problems from management issues to specifics contents will be presented and solved using the interactive whiteboard technologies. I have had the opportunity to work with over 50 school systems throughout Ohio and over 600 educators in how these technologies can and have worked in their classrooms. The total combinations of those experiences as well as the preliminary results of the research will be presented to support the concepts and issues discussed. Participants will leave with a better understanding on how interactive whiteboards can be used in their classroom for better student achievement. Teachers who attend will learn how to interact with their content by seeing content-specific examples. Teachers will see ideas of how to have students engage in their material through role-playing demonstrations. A holistic approach of including other technologies and applications will be showed as well, from cameras, scanners, MS Office, Internet, and web page editors. Teachers will receive information on how they can record their lessons for their times of absence, or differentiated instruction for remediation or gifted students. The last key strategy of this workshop is how information can be saved and placed online to document teacher’s classroom as well as access the absent students. Administrators will receive ideas on how they can continue development of their teachers by including interactive white boards into their professional developments. OutlineThe presentation will start with a brief introduction and get right into the content to maximize the time allowed. During the content, I will move through the basic hardware requirements and features of the software. This introduction and basics will take approximately 15 min. Next will be the content specific examples, including but not limited to, math, science, Language Arts, Social Studies, Foreign Language, Reading, , Geography, PreK-6 ideas, Physical Education, and Music. This section will last 30 min. or less. With the remaining time, well be demonstrations on how to involve the students, add the other technologies, make recording, and save information for the internet. Classroom management, set-up, and other administrators concerns will also be explained at that time. Supporting ResearchThere are a few reports already conducted on larger school systems implementing interactive whiteboard technologies. I am currently working on my research which explores multiple types of school systems, as well as taking a holistic approach of technology integration brought together through an interactive whiteboard. Presenter BackgroundIn February I was recognized as the 2006 eTech Ohio Technology Teacher of the Year for the entire State of Ohio. I am one of only 50+ educators in the world recognized as a SMART Exemplary Educator for my knowledge and experience SMART Technologies. I am a High School math teacher for Alliance High School, but I have worked with schools all over the country with integrating interactive boards into classrooms on all levels and subjects. I am also a current PhD student at the University of Akron, in Akron, Ohio, student Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Technology Integration. I have presented at multiple conferences in multiple sessions, including: The Southwestern Ohio Instructional Technology Association Conference, Ohio SchoolNet / eTech Ohio Annual Conference, the Ohio Council of Teacher of Mathematics Annual Conference, and Keynote speaker at the GAMES Annual conference. I have created a technology integration user group in my county which services over 100 educators. Once a month 50+ educators gather where we discuss different technology integration issues and interactive whiteboards. This user group has now expanded to 11 throughout the state that I help facilitate, and we are moving into three to four more states this school year. PrerequisitesOnly an interest in interactive whiteboard technologies and an interest to make classrooms more productive for student growth. Referenced Web Linkswww.alliancemath.us www.smarttech.com
