Concurrent Summary

Overview & Objectives
The challenges School Districts face involve the creation of sustainble planning to reach high academic standards, highly qualified teachers and the responsibility of handling large amounts of data consistently and effectively. Through the open-source business model, we have created a series of products guided toward giving content solutions for school districts.
Participants will:
1 understand the value of open-source solutions
2 gain a basic understanding of Moodle and ePortfolio
3 see how online courses and digital portfolios can benefit diverse learners and teachers
4 know how to continue more in depth learning of these topics through a public server and open-source sites.
Handouts, a digital presentation and available web portal will enable participants to expand their learning throughout the school year.

Outline
1 - Overview of using open-source projects and working under the open-source business model. Through digital presentation (10 minutes)
2 - Live Demonstration of Moodle using a model class - 20 minutes
3 - Live Demonstration of e-Portfolio - 10 minutes
4 - Live Demonstration of standards Tracker- 10 minutes
5 - Q and A

Supporting Research
There have been extensive research reports on the advantages of on-line collaborative learning, use of portfolios for reflective learning and data driven decision making. All these topics are addressed in this session.

V-NECC-Virtually Extending NECC Over Time and Place
Moodle is an online course management system. It incorporates, threaded discussions, blogs and collaborative projects. Following the session, a Moodle site will continue to be available to the attendees for experimentation throughout this school year.
